Alma Chapter 38

Alma counsels his son Shiblon, who had been persecuted for his righteousness.  Alma testifies to Shiblon about his own experience with the angel and his subsequent conversion and testifies that salvation comes only through Christ, who is the light and life of the world.  He counsels Shiblon to bridle his passions so that he can be filled with love.

Some religions teach that passions are evil and should be done away with as completely as possible. This is false doctrine. True doctrine is that we should "bridle" them.  When powerful horses are controlled by means of a bridle, they bring pleasure to the owner and rider.  Passions, like wise when bridled accordingly to the laws and counsels of God, provide much satisfaction and enjoyment.

Shiblon the son of Alma was described by Mormon as a just man who walked uprightly before God. He continually did good and obeyed the commandments of God.  Alma 63:2

In the year 56 BC, Shiblon received the sacred records from his older brother Helaman. He suceeded Helaman as keeper of the records.  Read Alma 38:9
