Know Your Neighbor - Popes

 Andrea and Shaun P.

Andrea did track and field in high school.  She was a sprinter and also competed in the Long Jump.  She went to Culinary School at the DATC.  She is an amazing cook!  When she is not creating works of art with food she spends time in the garden.  Andrea definitely has a green thumb.  She also cans the food she grows.  Another hobby is making jewelry.  She has an eye for design.  Currently, Andrea is serving on the Relief Society Committee.

Shaun played soccer which was definitely his sport.  He loves the outdoors and likes to go fly fishing.  He also bow hunts.  Shaun likes camping.  All this explains why he has been in the scouting program for so long.  He is a great scout leader.  Shaun is a team teacher for the 16year olds at church.  He works for Larry H. Miller as the Finance Manager.

Shaun and Andrea met at a Chicago Concert on the 4th of July.  Andrea states that she had never enjoyed listening to Chicago…It was a bonfire or something and that band just happened to be playing.  Andrea was still in High School. They were married about a month after graduation.

They have two kids, James and Lily.  James is six years old and is in the Chinese Immersion program at Stewart Elementary.  He is playing baseball right now but also loves soccer and will play that again in the fall.  He likes to ride his bike and play outside.  Lily loves to play in the sandbox.  She really likes playing with friends.  She is very silly and makes the family laugh all the time.  Lily likes to play dress up.

As a family they like to go camping and take little vacations, “stay-cations”, at home.  They also spend a lot of time at Bear Lake.  They have an incredible new deck and like to spend a lot of time in their backyard.  The family also likes to play games together and sometimes watch movies together.

"As Sisters in Zion"

RELIEF SOCIETY LESSON JUNE 17, 2012
Taught by Leila J.

What is a “sister in Zion”?

The hymn “As Sisters in Zion” has a beautiful message for us as women, especially the second verse:

The errand of angels is given to women;
And this is a gift that, as sisters, we claim:
To do whatsoever is gentle and human,
To cheer and to bless in humanity’s name.

What do you think is the “errand of angels”?  Do we realize the great gift women have with which we were foreordained to come to this earth?

Pres. Boyd K. Packer said, “The tender hand of the sister gives a gentle touch of healing and encouragement which the hand of a man, however well intentioned, can never quite duplicate.”

Nurturing is a part of us as women.  When a tender hand or gentle touch is needed, we don’t stop to think about what to do; we just naturally do it.

Elaine L. Jack, former RS General President:
“ ‘By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.’  (Alma 37:6)
Women’s lives are full of small and simple things--
discussions about how the day was, visits to schools, laughter at a homemade joke, work in its many forms, playing with children, trips to the doctor, tending the garden, cooking meals, teaching a lesson in church, helping a neighbor, serving a community group, sharing a lesson learned with a sister.”

Not only do we serve and nurture our families, but we also serve and nurture each other.  Remember Pres. Packer’s quote--no matter how well intentioned a man may be, he can never quite duplicate the tender hand of a woman.

We listen to each other, we help each other, we relate to each other, we understand each other.  This is a part of the “errand of angels.”

“We cannot change nor take away the burdens of others, but we can include and belong to each other in love.”  --Bonnie Parkin

Elaine Jack said, ”We are part of a grand whole.  We need each other to make our sisterhood complete....We work, play, give birth, nurture, dream dreams; we cry, pray, laugh, sometimes clap for joy, and find that mortality teaches us our need for our Savior, Jesus Christ.

“He is with all of us, and His spirit draws us closer as we link arms together in our
gospel sisterhood.

Powerful Promises of the Book of Mormon

Taught by Sue G.
Alma 20

The Lord commands Ammon to go to Middoni and free Aaron and his missionary companions from prison. On their way to Middoni, Ammon and his father, King Lamoni run into King Lamoni's father who is King over all the Lamanites. He tries to slay Lamoni, but Ammon subdues him and agrees to spare his life if he will release his brethren from prison and let Lamoni retain his kingdom. He gives Lamoni independence to run the affairs of his kingdom. They arrive in Middoni and are able to secure the release of the missionaries from prison.

Love, felt and expressed, becomes a great motivator for righteousness. This is demonstrated when Ammon and King Lamoni encounter Lamoni's father on the way to Middoni. At first angry and determined to Kill Ammon., the old Kings heart is softened when he sees the great love that Ammon feels for Lamoni. The pure love of Christ is especially powerful, it is the motivating energy within every righteous act. When love is felt, lives are changed, and gratitude is realized, leading to the kind of action later taken by Lamoni's father.

Promises:
  • The  Lord directs and inspires us as we work to accomplish His purpose.
  • The Lord strengthens and protects His servants.  Alma 20:17

Recipe Group / "Healthy Granola Cookies"

Taught by Andrea P.

These cookies were amazing!!

Andrea made three different varieties of cookies from the same basic Granola Cookie recipe.

She put applesauce and cinnamon chips in one batch,
banana's and walnuts in one batch
and the favorite batch had raspberries and
chocolate chips!

She said you can really put anything you have
and like in them.

Granola Cookies
(Note: these have no eggs or oil.)

Mix:
1 cup turbinado raw sugar (regular granulated sugar works fine)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup applesauce or fruit puree

Add then mix:
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla

Add these ingredients slowly, to make sure it is the consistency you like:
2 cups wheat flour (Andrea used part wheat and part white)
2-3 cups oats (ready or quick)

Add:
chocolate chips, raisins, craisins, nuts, etc. as you desire.

Bake at 375 degrees for 13-15 minutes. The cookies do not spread out while baking so flatten a little if desired.
*They are not as good too soft or too hard. They will harden a bit after taking them out of the oven.

Know Your Neighbor

Scott & Camille Family
Camille S. recently got married to Scott J.  Scott is a Centerville native.  He grew up here and has lived here all of his life.  He attended and graduated from Viewmont High School.  Scott served a mission in New York.  He was in the New York, New York Mission.  Other than that he has lived in Centerville his whole life.

He has always liked being outdoors.  He likes to go hiking and camping.  In recent years he has started canyoneering to places like Zion’s National Park and Moab.  Canyoneering  is when a person hikes in and repels down the canyon walls.  Some trails or path trips are 19 hours long.  They wear wetsuits because they are in and out of water so often.  Scott has a group of friends who he goes with.  Sometimes he takes his boys with him.  Wow, sounds fun huh. Recently, he helped a friend down in Alpine with their Young Men’s Group.  He took them up Big Cottonwood Canyon and Scott trained and taught the boys how to do Canyoneering.

Scott also likes to garden.  He enjoys yard work and vegetable gardening.  Camille says he likes to grow huge pumpkins and lots of different vegetables.  He spends a lot of time in the yard.

Scott works for L3 Communications.  He is a Program Manager.  Camille says he explains his job this way.  He works with a group of engineers to make really expensive walkie talkies that communicate with a satellite in space, a plane or missile.  His group builds them.

Scott’s parents and Camille’s parents live 2 doors down from each other.  Scott and Camille were friends in college.  They have a common group of friends.  When Camille moved back to Centerville they met again through mutual friends.  The group gets together about once a month.  They started catching up when they saw each other again and the rest is history.

Scott has two boys, Carter and Tanner.  Holland is so happy to have two brothers now! Carter is 11 years old and in the 5th grade.  He goes to school at Stewart Elementary.  Carter plays competition soccer.  He plays keeper.  He is so tall that he can really stop the balls.  He likes to read and his favorite book series are the Fabelhaven books.  He is his dad’s buddy.  He likes to be around his dad doing whatever he is doing.  He is a huge helper and will even start unloading the groceries without being asked!  Carter is a big tease and has a great sense of humor.

Tanner is 7 years old and in the 1st grade.  He attends Reading Elementary with Holland.  He is a busy body and has tons of energy.  He is a sweet boy, loving and smart.  He loves to read and do puzzles.  Tanner really likes Legos, both boys like them.  He is a typical boy and likes to play with swords and use his imagination.  He and Holland are buddies and play really well together.

As a family they like to do everything together.  Scott is a great cook and the whole family likes to cook together.  They make homemade ice-cream every weekend.  They have made some fun flavors like root beer, coconut, and raspberry.  If you need an ice cream recipe now you know who to ask.  They like to ride bikes and go on walks together.  Because their extended family is so close they spend a lot of time with them.  They also like to play games together.

We welcome to the neighborhood!  We are so happy to have you here.

Powerful Promises of the Book of Mormon

Alma 19
Taught by Sue G.

After hearing Ammon preach, King Lamoni recieves light and sees the Lord. Overcome by the spirit, he and most of his household fall into a trance and are believed to be dead.

The Queen sends for Ammon who assures her that her husband will arise the next day. She believes him.

The King arises the next day and bears witness of the Atonement saying he has seen the redeemer. He, the Queen and Ammon are all overcome by the Spirit and fall to the ground.
Abish a Lamanite woman who, unknown to others, was a convert, witnesses the miracle and runs to tell others.

Discussion follows and a man who tries to kill Ammon is struck dead by the power of God. After reviving, the King goes forth to help teach the gospel to the Lamanites. Many are baptized.

Promises:
  • The Spirit of the Lord may have a very dramatic. effect on people who have been especially wicked.
  • The Lord will redeem all those who believe him.
  • The Lord protects and spares His Servants.
  • The Lord's arm is extended to all who will repent and believe on His name.
  • The Lord keeps his promises; Ammom could not be slain because the Lord had promised his father (King Moshiah11) that He would protect his sons on their missions.

Chapter 10: The Scriptures, the Most Valuable Library in the World

Taught by Mary L.

An umbrella can protect us from the elements such as rain, sleet, or snow. In order for the umbrella to protect us from the elements it must be opened and used in order to offer that protection. Liken the umbrella to the scriptures. The scriptures were given to teach us the truth, which protects us from Satan's deceptions and temptations. So in order to protect us, the scriptures must be open and used.

God has given us the holy scriptures to help us and our families prepare for eternal life.

George Albert Smith consistently affirmed his love of the scriptures and his desire that we spend more time with them:

(The scriptures are) the greatest library to be found in all the world. What does it contain? It contains what your Gather and mine has thought of enough importance to preserve and give to the children of men and make accessible in many languages of the World. These scriptures are all important and should be understood by the Latter-day Saints. I am not going to ask you to hold up your hands to ascertain how many here assembled have ever read these books, but I desire to call your attention to the fact that these are precious truths, and they contain the real word of the Lord printed and published to the world for the purpose of preparing his children for a place in the celestial kingdom. That is why I say they are so valuable. ..How thankful we ought to be that we live in a day and age when we can read his advice and counsel and have things explained that otherwise might be obscure and uncertain to us.

Brethren and sisters, I desire to emphasize again the teaching of the Master: "search the scriptures;" read them prayerfully and faithfully, teach them in your homes; call your families around you and inspire in them a faith in the living God, by reading those things that have been revealed. They are the most precious of all the libraries in all the world.

Once, while traveling by train, President Smith started a conversation with a man who was raised in a Latter-day Saint family but was no longer participating in the Church. "As we visited," he later said, "I talked to him about the gospel of Jesus Christ. ...And he said as we discussed the principles of the gospel, 'These things interest me.' We visited quite a long time, and when we finished, that good man, I believe he was a good man, said to me, 'I would give all that I possess to have the assurance that you have. ...'

"I said, 'My brother, you don't have to give all that you possess to have that assurance. All you have to do is to search the scriptures prayerfully. Go where they may be explained to you. Seek the truth, and the beauty of the truth will appeal to you, and ... you can know as I know that God lives, that Jesus is the Christ, that Joseph Smith is a prophet of the Living God.

How did you come to know that the scripture are true?

What experiences with the scriptures have you had recently that have strengthened your testimony?

Pondering the scriptures can increase our joy and delight in the scriptures and bring us closer to the Savior. The Holy Ghost inspired those who wrote the scriptures.

President Harold B. Lee recommended a daily reading of the scriptures when he said, "If we're not reading the scriptures daily, our testimonies are growing thinner, our spirituality isn't increasing in depth"

There are many ways to study the scriptures, such as reading fifteen minutes a day or a chapter  very day. Some people read a few verses and then think, ponder, and pray about those verse. Some study the scriptures by picking one topic and reading from all of the scriptures about that topic. Whatever method awe use, however, it is important to read at least something in the scriptures every day, even if it is only a verse or two.  It doesn't matter how we do it, it is just making the time to do it.

I hope we can all be more diligent in reading the scriptures to keep us on the right path. The ward has challenged us to read the book of Mormon with our youth. I hope we will take it seriously.

Know Your Neighbor

Bishop Craig S. and Terry S.
(Currently serving as Relief Society President)

Bishop S. grew up in West Bountiful. He had a cow he had to milk and horses to ride. He enjoyed lots of hard work and fun growing up! He served a mission to South Dakota. He loves to hunt, especially Pheasants. He takes a pheasant hunting trip with many family members back to South Dakota and Nabraska every year. He also loves fishing in Alaska! He loves to travel and has been lucky enough to have been able to visit many wonderful places. His favorite place, if he had to say, would be the Cook Islands. He owns a Heating and Air-conditioning business. His three sons now all work with him in his business. He served as Bishop here in the Willow Wood Ward from August 2007 through September 2011. While serving as Bishop he attended a girls camp at a dude ranch where there was a Bull named Lucifer. At the end of some bull riding by the girls, he stunned everyone as he proceeded to spontaneously throw Lucifer to the ground. The girls knew then that the Bishop would do anything for them, even take down Lucifer!!!

Terry was born in Maine and lived in Florida, New Hampshire and North Dakota ending up here in Utah when she was ten. She and Bishop S. were Hi School sweethearts. She "waited" for him while he was on his mission. Her Father was killed in a plane crash when she was nine years old. She was a nanny for six months for a Jewish family with three girls on Stanton Island. Her favorite thing is to vacation with family. Terry loves to sew especially quilts! She has also gone several times to Africa to serve with 'Mother's Without Borders' teaching the women how to sew and helping in the orphanage. She has also helped to raise money for Mother's Without Borders by helping with a craft boutique each year who's proceeds all go directly to the cause. She made a quilt the last two years that were auctioned at the boutique garnering some pretty hefty amounts for such a great cause!
This is last years quilt representing many of the things experienced when going to Africa with Mother's without Borders.

Together they have three boys and one girl, all who are married and bringing forth wonderful grandchildren, nine so far. They have property in the Mountains in Wyoming where they have built a wonderful family cabin that they truly enjoy with all their posterity.

Presidents Message:

I believe there are angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere up above
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live
To teach us how to give
To guide us with a light of love

When life dealt troubled times
and had me down on my knees
There's always been someone there
to come along and comfort me
A kind word from a stranger
to lend a helping hand
A phone call from a friend just to say
I understand
Ain't it kind of funny
at the dark end of the road
Someone lights the way
with just a single ray of hope

They wear so many faces
Show up in the strangest places
Grace us with thier mercy
In our time of need

Oh I believe there are angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere up above
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live
To teach us how to give
To guide us with a light of love
